The Cheshire Rail Trail, also known as the Ashuelot Rail Trail is a great family hike. It spans about 42 miles from end to end. It is a mix of paved and dirt paths through both populated and remote areas. It starts in Fitzwilliam, NH, and ends in Walpole, NH.
The rail trail runs through the center of Keene, NH. A beautiful New England college town. This section of the rail trail is paved making for a smooth walk or ride. You’ll cross over the Ashuelot River by means of a beautiful arched bridge. You may want to visit the picturesque downtown and take in some of the local shops.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, both the southern and northern ends are dirt paths. These old railroad beds are great for walking, mountain biking, or horseback riding during the warmer seasons.
